Packaging Innovation

2022 marked the beginning of a new era in our journey, as we opened the doors to our brand new first of its kind canning line in the country. This state-of-the-art facility plays an imperative role in our commitment to introduce sustainable packaging solutions. while also packing Coca-Cola companies much-loved beverages in cans manufactured right here at home.

The canning line at our bottling plant on Thulusdhoo Island marked a historical moment in Coca-Cola's journey in the Maldives, contributing to Coca-Cola's efforts to innovate and expand its packaging offerings with eco-friendly and sustainable packaging solutions in the Maldives.

The facility produces 12 of Coca-Cola's most loved brands including Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, Sprite, Sprite Zero sugar, Fanta Orange, Fanta Strawberry and Schweppes range that includes Schweppes Bitter Lemon, Schweppes Soda Water and Schweppes Tonic Water in 185 milliliters and 330 milliliters pack sizes, all available and made in Maldives cans.

Packaging Recovery & Recycling

Packaging Recovery & Recycling

Waste management is a real challenge for a small island nation. Even though PET plastic is a small share of the country’s total waste stream, we are committed to recovering our packaging material and giving them a second life. MAWC is taking the lead in the Maldives, in closing the loop of our PET footprint s. Our packaging recovery rate (PRR) tells that story in numbers: Starting from a baseline of 0, MAWC achieved a PRR of 45% in 2023 and has since grown to 70% today, with a firm ambition to reach 100%+ by end of2027. Getting there requires, continued investment in the Maldives waste system, alongside our partners.

Investing in the Maldives' Recycling Infrastructure

Investing in the Maldives' Recycling Infrastructure

MAWC, alongside The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Maldives Ocean Plastic Alliance (MOPA) and Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), are investing directly in the physical systems the Maldives needs to manage its waste better. Together, The Coca Cola System has committed over $2 million to this work, with MOPA and UNDP as implementing partners on the ground. With TCCF support MOPA established the Maldives' first dedicated Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Hulhumalé - purpose-built for collecting, sorting, baling, and processing PET for export. MOPA–WAMCO partnership has extended PET collection out to the atolls, supported by MAWC's own distribution network for inter-island transport. Alongside TCCF’s work with UNDP and WAMCO is bringing clean energy and cleaner logistics to island waste management, a new fleet of electric vehicles for island waste collection was handed over to WAMCO, a rooftop solar upgrade at the Maafushi Waste Centre is underway, estimated to generate 49,000 kWh a year to support its full operation. Additional technical training to WAMCO teams and support to island councils to develop their waste management plan will ensure communities are equipped with the knowledge and capacity to maintain these systems for the long run. We do not stop here. The next flagship initiative, backed by TCCF, is a PET washing and shredding line at Thilafushi Industrial Zone. Upgrading recovered plastic to a quality that can compete in high-value export markets and pushing us closer to a fully circular PET economy in Maldives.

Community & Social Impact

Community & Social Impact

Since 1989 MAWC has been supporting the community development initiates in Thulusdhoo, homebase to our bottling plant. Notable initiates include supporting the development of new pre-school facility, school library, island mosque renovation, and rebuilding the local futsal ground.

Since 2013, MAWC provides free purified drinking water to Thulusdhoo residents, covering around 12% of the island's daily water demand through public outlets, available 24/7.

We also show up for the everyday moments that make an island community: sponsoring local sports events, running World Environment & Water Day programmes in schools, and holding home, fire, and road safety sessions for students and parents alike.
